Wainscott, named after a village north of Maidstone, England, was founded in 1688 by farmers attracted by the unprecedented rich soil. One of the first was John Osborn. He remained on the land and his ancestors can be found there today, and have been farming in Wainscott for over ten generations. Wainscot is a mix of farmland and woodland. South of the Highway, historic shingled homes, and a classic one-room schoolhouse on the Main Street create an old world ambiance as you make your way past the lush countryside toward the ocean. North of the highway, contemporary homes are nestled into the wooded acres. The famous Seafood Shop, and Breadzilla, on the main highway, are two not-to-be-missed gourmet stops.
